چکیده

We present analyses of observations of ǫ Eridani (K2 V) made with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra and the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer , supplemented by observations made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spec-trograph, the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton. The observed emission lines are used to find relative element abundances, to place limits on the electron densities and pressures and to determine the mean apparent emission measure distribution. As in the previous paper by Sim & Jordan (2003a), the mean emitting area as a function of the electron temperature is derived by comparisons with a theoretical emission measure distribution found from energy balance arguments. The final model has a coronal temperature of 3.4 × 10 6 K, an electron pressure of 1.3 × 10 16 cm −3 K at T e = 2 × 10 5 K and an area filling factor of 0.14 at 3.2 × 10 5 K. We discuss a number of issues concerning the atomic data currently available. Our analyses are based mainly on the latest version of CHIANTI (v5.2). We conclude that the Ne/O relative abundance is 0.30, larger than that recommended from solar studies, and that there is no convincing evidence for enhanced coronal abundances of elements with low first ionization potentials.

A dust ring around Epsilon Eridani: analogue to the young Solar System

Dust emission around the nearby star ǫ Eridani has been imaged using a new submillimetre camera (SCUBA at the JCMT). At 850 μm wavelength a ring of dust is seen, peaking at 60 AU from the star and with much lower emission inside 30 AU. The mass of the ring is at least ∼ 0.01 M⊕ in dust, while an upper limit of 0.4 M⊕ in molecular gas is imposed by CO observations. The total mass is comparable t...

On the filling factor of emitting material in the upper atmosphere of ǫ Eri ( K 2 V )

The emission measure distribution in the upper transition region and corona of ǫ Eri is derived from observed emission line fluxes. Theoretical emission measure distributions are calculated assuming that the radiation losses are balanced by the net conductive flux. We discuss how the area factor of the emitting regions as a function of temperature can be derived from a comparison between these ...

Detecting a rotation in the ǫ Eridani debris disc

The evidence for a rotation of the ǫ Eridani debris disc is examined. Data at 850 μm wavelength were previously obtained using the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) over periods in 1997-1998 and 2000-2002. By χ fitting after shift and rotation operations, images from these two epochs were compared to recover proper motion and orbital motion of the disc. The same procedures were ...

A study of velocity fields in the transition region of ǫ Eri ( K 2 V )

Analyses of the widths and shifts of optically thin emission lines in the ultraviolet spectrum of the active dwarf ǫ Eri (K2 V) are presented. The spectra were obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The line widths are used to find the nonthermal energy density and its variation with temperature from ...

Modeling the Infrared Emission from the ǫ Eridani Disk

We model the infrared (IR) emission from the ring-like dust disk around the main-sequence (MS) star ǫ Eridani, a young analog to our solar system, in terms of a porous dust model previously developed for the extended wedge-shaped disk around the MS star β Pictoris and the sharply truncated ring-like disks around the Herbig Ae/Be stars HR 4796A and HD 141569A. It is shown that the porous dust mo...
